ANNELIES ŠTRBA

ABOUT

A photographer since the age of 15, Annelies Štrba has found the material with which she would build her visual language and extraordinary artistic career within the domestic realm. Her three children—Sonja, Linda, and Samuel—photographed while sleeping or in everyday moments, become the protagonists of a world with a frozen, suspended atmosphere, somewhere between real subjects and archetypes.

Starting in the 2000s, the artist moved increasingly toward painting and began regularly printing her photographs on canvas. More recently, she has also started painting over some of these photos directly on canvas. Her subjects include landscapes—sometimes inhabited by long-haired women or children in perfect harmony with nature—Madonnas, and flowers.

Like lyrical or esoteric visions, her vibrant, unstable, timeless, and mysterious images, often saturated or overexposed in color, offer enchanting scenes where the outer and inner worlds converge.

Annelies Štrba was recently awarded the prestigious Willy Reber Kunstpreis (2020).
