With my Body

ABOUT

Bruno Gadenne, Ayana V. Jackson, Roméo Mivekannin, Sophie Ryder, Marta Zgierska

This Autumn, GOWEN presents With my Body, a group exhibition exploring the body as both subject and medium.

The show features five international artists who consistently use their own bodies as tools of representation and inquiry. While the works are rooted in personal experience and self-exposure, they move far beyond conventional notions of self-portraiture, addressing personal, political, and emotional narratives with depth and complexity.

Through painting, photography, and sculpture, the exhibition reveals how the body can serve as a site of presence, memory, imagination, and transformation. Despite their distinct visual languages, Bruno Gadenne, Ayana V. Jackson, Roméo Mivekannin, Sophie Ryder and Marta Zgierska share a commitment to embodied storytelling, engaging with themes such as memory of history, generational representation, the natural environment, mythology, spirituality, human experience, trauma and beauty.

A highlight of the exhibition is a special collaboration with Ayana V. Jackson, featuring key works from her most pivotal series since 2011. Included are four newly edited pieces from her acclaimed Drexciya series, recently presented at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art.

The show includes approximately 30 works, with several on loan from private collections. A particular thank you to Galerie Barbara Thumm for their kind cooperation.
